Emoji Guess KH Project Report

1. The Concept

Emoji Guess KH is a mobile-first bilingual puzzle game designed for Khmer youth aged 13–24. Players connect related emoji pairs, solve visual challenges, and answer Emoji Math questions in short sessions lasting around two to five minutes.

The project combines familiar emojis with Khmer culture, colorful 3D-style visuals, IQ rewards, daily challenges, hints, lives, and special levels. Its goal is to make logical thinking approachable and entertaining while offering a game experience in both Khmer and English.

2. The Stack

The Stack: HTML5 provides the game structure, CSS3 handles the responsive interface and animations, and vanilla JavaScript controls levels, drawing connections, scoring, hints, audio, language switching, and saved progress. The project also uses the Web Audio API, browser Local Storage, WebP images, sprite sheets, a custom Khmer font, and Python and PowerShell asset tools.

The AI Assist: AI supported the planning, bilingual content, puzzle design, interface iteration, code implementation, asset optimization, debugging, and browser testing. It also helped turn visual feedback into consistent Home, gameplay, Pause, Hint, result, and Emoji Math screens.

3. The 1 Day Sprint:

Morning (Hours 1–3): Defined the audience, core gameplay loop, bilingual direction, and mobile-first layout. Built the initial HTML structure and JavaScript data model, then created the first connect-the-pair levels with scoring, hints, lives, and progression.

Afternoon (Hours 4–6): Expanded the game to 15 levels across three chapters, added special rounds, Daily Challenge, and Emoji Math. Added Khmer and English translations, IQ and rank progression, sound effects, background music, and browser-based progress saving.

The Finish Line (Hour 7-8): Refined the Home screen and gameplay interface, unified the 3D button design, improved Pause and result popups, added responsive behavior, converted image assets to WebP, and tested the main game flows in a browser.

4. The Roadblocks

Roadblocks: The largest challenge was maintaining one consistent visual language while the interface changed through many design iterations. Buttons, popups, HUD elements, emoji sizes, and backgrounds initially looked disconnected. Mobile screen height also required careful spacing so the board and controls remained visible. Other challenges included drawing smooth connection lines, supporting touch and mouse input, finding intuitive emoji relationships, keeping Khmer text readable, managing two languages, and reducing asset size without losing visual quality.

These issues were addressed by defining a shared 3D button style, using responsive dimensions, organizing emoji artwork into sprite sheets, saving lightweight state in Local Storage, and repeatedly checking the game in a real browser.

5. Key Takeaways

A simple game becomes more engaging when it combines clear feedback, short progression loops, varied challenges, and a strong visual identity. Consistency between the Home screen, gameplay controls, and result screens matters as much as individual visual details.

Designing for Khmer and English from the beginning made the interface easier to maintain. Testing on a mobile-sized viewport also revealed layout problems earlier than desktop-only testing would have.

The project shows that a polished browser game can be created without a large framework. Plain web technologies are enough when the game state, content, assets, and UI rules are organized carefully.

My final thought: Emoji Guess KH started as a simple matching idea and grew into a distinct bilingual puzzle experience. Its strongest direction is the combination of Khmer-friendly content, quick gameplay, expressive emoji artwork, and enough variety to give players a reason to return.
