Park Out Project Report
1. The Concept
Park Out is a colorful, mobile-first parking puzzle game. Players slide cars through a parking area, clear a route for the selected car, and guide it to the exit using as few moves as possible. The project includes a loading screen, home screen, level map, gameplay board, garage, settings, and level-complete reward flow.
2. The Stack
The Stack: Vanilla HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in a single-page web game. The visual interface uses WebP artwork for game screens, vehicles, menus, buttons, and popups. Progress, settings, coins, unlocked levels, and selected cars are stored locally in the browser with Local Storage. Audio uses locally bundled WAV and OGG assets.
The AI Assist: Codex assisted with interface implementation, responsive layout improvements, generated and organized game assets, gameplay feedback, audio integration, and project documentation.
3. The 1 Day Sprint:
Morning (Hours 1–3): Defined the Park Out game flow and built the initial structure for the loading, home, level-map, gameplay, garage, settings, and victory screens. Added the level data model and the core drag-to-move parking puzzle logic.
Afternoon (Hours 4–6): Reworked the visual design using game-ready WebP assets. Improved the gameplay board, consistent two-cell and three-cell vehicle sizing, the level map, garage cards, coin display, level-complete popup, and mobile landscape behavior.
The Finish Line (Hour 7–8): Added player feedback including car selection glow, movement feedback, blocked-move feedback, coin reward animation, switches for settings, responsive full-screen mobile layout, and locally bundled audio for gameplay and UI actions.
4. The Roadblocks
Roadblocks: The largest challenge was preserving consistent vehicle proportions across horizontal and vertical orientations while keeping every car aligned to the board grid. Another challenge was adapting a 16:9 game design to mobile landscape screens without cropping the board, exit, controls, or menus. Audio also required browser-safe playback behavior because mobile browsers only allow sound after a player interaction. These issues were handled with responsive CSS breakpoints, one consistent sprite approach for vehicle orientation, safe-area-aware layout rules, and an audio unlock step on the player’s first action.
5. Key Takeaways
Good puzzle games need immediate feedback. Small details—such as a glow on the selected car, a clear blocked-move response, move counters, coin feedback, and concise sound effects—make the game easier to understand and more enjoyable.
Responsive design must be considered as part of the game design, not only as a final adjustment. The gameplay board, HUD, exit, controls, and garage all need to scale together on smaller landscape screens.
My final thought: Park Out now has a complete and friendly game experience: clear visual hierarchy, mobile-ready screens, consistent puzzle pieces, useful feedback, accessible settings, and a foundation that can be extended with more levels, vehicles, sounds, and rewards.
